               Validating your Driver’s Licence

EU or EEA (European Economic Area) Citizens
If you are a EU or EEA citizen, you can drive freely in every country of the EU and EEA with your valid national driving licence. You can ask for the international driving licence for free at the Prefecture, but it is not mandatory in France.
Your national driving licence is compulsorily withdrawn if you have committed an offense that led to restriction or suspension measures, disqualification from driving or a loss of points on your licence.

Non EU or EEA Citizens
You can exchange your driving licence for a French one. Requests should be made within one year after acquiring a French address.
However, an exchange is possible only if there is a reciprocity convention between your country and France. The list of countries that have a convention with France is available on the Prefecture website.
If the driving licence is not exchangeable, you will have to pass the French driving licence.

Students
Foreign students with a residence permit (carte de séjour), with the mention étudiant-élève on it, can drive in France with their foreign driving licence until the end of their studies.
If students want to stay in France after their studies, they have one year to exchange their driving licence for a French one.
